The Big Picture: Why you do what you do

I am convinced that running a business profitably is only a means to an end, and that perhaps success means something much more than profits. Take for instance Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey or Warren Buffet; who are known to donate huge chunks of their profits to charity and humanitarian causes. Some of them have gone as far as saying they want to be remembered for bringing change and helping people rather than for their business acumen. For these people, it is safe to say their business is merely a platform upon which they can execute their purpose.

Recently a Client who is starting a real estate company told me her big dream is to make sure everyone had a roof over their head. She strongly feels low cost accommodation should be made easily available to those that need it. Could she be on her path to discovering her purpose yes, no?

Whether you are a fashion designer, lawyer, teacher, or an interior decorator, your life’s work should result in something greater than financial gain.

What is the underlying purpose behind your business? Let me know in the comments if you share the same sentiments.

Nice read. I think the key thing is to discover why you do what do! Unfortunately, for many of us young people, success is the goal. It is after success is achieved that we may begin to think of other goal... God help us..
